Fabric Designing with Paintstiks

 Shelly Stokes, author Paintstiks on Fabric: Simple Techniques, Fantastic Results, will lead you through two days of design and experimentation using Shiva Paintstiks. Explore the possibilities! Learn to use Paintstiks and Foil as embellishments for your quilting, garment, and fiber art projects. Mornings will be spent in "how to" sessions. Afternoons will be spent working on small projects such as fabric postcards or journal pages. Participants can choose a motif or design and then create multiple variations on that design using various materials and techniques.

Dye Intensive-Fabric Design and Color Manipulation

Joan Skalbeck, the founder of Primrose Gradations will lead you through the process and techniques of fabric design and dyeing. For five days you will be one with your rubber gloves.

Class instruction will cover fabric types and preparation, color therory and dye mixing. Using thin and thickened procion dyes, Joan will share her knowlege of high and low water immersion dyeing, direct dyeing, stamping, stenciling, screen printing and dye resist fabric design. At the end of this seminar you will go home with 10 yards of hand dyed fabric and a well used pair of rubber gloves.

Learn many extrodinary techniques from classically trained artist Anna VanDemark. Using nature-based imagery and easy fusible appliqué, enjoy making an original quilt design. This 20" x 36" wall hanging includes these exciting surface design techniques, foiling and oil paint stick rubbing. Free-motion quilting designs and methods will also be presented.

*This 2 day class is geared toward the intermediate quilter, who has some free-motion quilting experience.

"This class will feature many of the newer surface design and embellishment techniques that I teach in my monthly journal classes at Colorful Quilts and which will appear in my upcoming book. Angelina, painted Wonder Under, and silk fusion are a three of the ten things to be covered. Everything you create can go onto a quilt and all are easily done at home with little equipment. Bead Creative Art Quilts - Beading as THE Primary Design Element

Start by exploring line and form through a variety of fun design development exercises and record your discoveries for future reference in a design journal. Then, Nancy will lead you through a myriad of abstract, lush, textural beading stitches and processes; mostly her own discoveries. Participants will be given time to adapt and explore the presented beading techniques while making small beaded fabric based units without a preconceived idea of how the units might be attached to form an original art quilt wall hanging. This design as you go method of creating a beaded fabric collage is both enjoyable and liberating! Color, value, and scale as they pertain to beading on fabric will also be discussed, as well as demonstrations of numerous beading tips and the tools which will make beading pleasurable. This is a hands-on workshop; all hand beading experience levels are welcome.

Sun and Fun on the North Shore

 A few hours on a nature hike in the forests and shores of northern Minnesota will provide the design materials for your very own sun print. Use your newly created fabric to whip out a few hand made, very unique post cards, bragging to your friends about the wonderful time you had.

Joan Skalbeck guides you through the sun printing process and then Cindy Provencher will lead the postcard class, exploring the art and craft of postcard making. Fusing, free motion embroidery, use of decorative thread and embellisments are some of the topics covered. Postage included.

Hot Time In the Old Town---
This small wall hanging is a Beginning/Intermediate paper-piecing project using the Sunburst Block. We will discuss color and value, building a swatchboard and Claudia's "low frustration" methods of paper-piecing.

Drop Your Feed Dogs and Run---
We'll learn the free-motion scrollwork that adds dimension to your wall hanging plus other free motion quilting for your backgrounds, block-fillers and borders. You can either quilt your finished wall hanging or create a sampler of machine quilting designs to be used on future projects.
