Shelly Stokes is an artist, lecturer, teacher and quilter who simply loves to play with fabric! As a teacher, her goal is to "infect" her students with a passion for transforming and creating their own special fabrics using both traditional and rather unexpected techniques and materials.
Shelly lives with her husband in a rural area near Alexandria, Minnesota. She began quilting in 1995 after leaving the corporate world. Since then, she has branched out into the creation of hand-dyed fabric, art cloth, and art quilts. Her latest adventure is an exploration of paintstiks and fabric. Shelly's book on this topic, Paintstiks on Fabric: Simple Techniques, Fantastic Results, was released in the spring of 2005.
Shelly teaches quilting and fiber art classes at conferences in the upper Midwest, including the Minnesota Quilt Show and Conference. Her teaching adventures have taken her as far away as Nairobi, Kenya. Shelly's award winning work has been displayed at regional and national shows including the Minnesota Quilt Show, Quilting the Quilt and the AQS National Quilt Show in Paducah, Kentucky. Her quilts have appeared in the 2002 Quilt Art Engagement Calendar and the book "New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Tumbling Blocks." She has published articles in Love of Quilting, Quilters Newsletter Magazine, and Fabric Trends.
After a 10-year break from the business world, Shelly jumped back in with both feet! She is the president and chief-cook-and-bottle-washer at Cedar Canyon Textiles, Inc. Her company is a distributor for the Shiva Paintstik products and a manufacturer of rubbing plates and other paintstik accessories.
