About The Artist
Joan Skalbeck is the
creative force behind Primrose Gradations. She graduated St.
Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota, with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (B.F.A.) in Fiber Arts. Being
trained as a weaver and paper artist, Joan originally
started dyeing her own yarns and fibers for her original
works of art associated with her undergraduate degree. Her
interest in dyeing fabrics and fibers culminated in her
senior thesis, a recipe book of colored fibers and fabrics.
In the process of this research, Joan developed an unusual
knack for combining disassociated colors into pleasing
combinations.
While mostly self-taught,
Joan studied briefly under famed quiltmaker and color artist
Jan Myers-Newbury, who encouraged Joan to share her talent
and passion for color with fellow fiber artists. Armed with
this encouragement, Joan resumed the research she began
years earlier in her college career. After stints in
"Corporate America" and other business adventures, Joan
decided in 1994 to return to her true love of fibers arts.
Concluding 2-1/2 years of exhaustive experimentation, she
proudly debuted her Primrose Gradations Collection of
cotton fabrics and matching buttons designed for fabric
artists.
